Holiday Immersion Weeks

CIADC’s Immersion classes are designed for those who are not able to commit to a typical 5-week or 10-week class, and/or for those who want the continuity of a Monday – Friday creative learning and working schedule. Immersion Weeks are open to ages 16+, of all skill-level and interest. Be immersed and grow leaps and bounds with your creative object making!

Immersion Week A: December 10-14, 9am-12pm -or- 1pm-4pm

Immersion Week B: December 17-21, 9am-4pm (w/ 1-hr lunch)

From October 13 - 14, The Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center will participate in Open House Chicago as one of the sites of the tour and program! Come to learn more about the amazing history behind our building and see our shops in action!

The Chicago Architecture Center's Open House Chicago is a free public festival that offers behind-the-scenes access to more than 250 buildings across Chicago.

Explore the hidden gems and architectural treasures of Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods—all for free.

Have you ever walked by a building and thought, "I wish I could see what's inside?" Now you can. Tour soaring skyscrapers, repurposed mansions, opulent theaters, exclusive private clubs, private offices and breathtaking sacred spaces.

Summer's not over yet! Join us on Saturday, August 25th from 1-4pm, for food, drinks, and community, and help us wind down Summer in style at our End of Summer BBQ and Open House!

Bring a grill item and/or a dish to share; we'll provide drinks and everything else!

Visit our Casting & Molding, Metalworking & Forging, Technology & Design, and Woodworking shops in action. Hear about our upcoming Fall Teen and Adult classes. See works on display in our gallery.

Schedule of events:

  • 1-4pm: Gallery Reception: Works from the CIADC Summer Teen and Adult programming!
  • 1:30pm: Bronze pour in the Casting shop! Arrive by 1:15pm...
  • 2:30pm: Presentation: SolidWorks 3D Modeling for CNC Output in the Tech shop!
  • 1-3:30pm: Work activity in all the shops, including forging demos!

Tour of Renowned Crab Tree Farm Collection

CIADC Members and a Guest are invited to a private tour of Crab Tree Farm on Saturday, May 5th from 10 am to 1 pm. 

Crab Tree Farm http://www.crabtreefarm.org is a living museum just north of Lake Bluff. Several of the buildings display Arts and Crafts collections in settings that have been created to reflect the aesthetics of the Arts and Crafts movement. In addition to these buildings there is a full time woodworker, Mike Jarvi, with an active workshop specializing in bent wood furniture. A highlight of past tours is a piece of Cloud Gate, “The Bean”, created as a prototype on display in the gardens. This is a unique opportunity that is only available to a handful of private groups each year so don’t miss out!

Cost is $20 per person (to be paid day of event), an includes lunch. Everyone will meet at the Farm in Lake Bluff on May 5th.

Topic: Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) Machines for Creatives

Kicking off our social gathering series is an overview of CNC Machines, and what purpose they can serve creatives. CIADC is happy to announce that we will be receiving our first shop-sized CNC machine, a ShopSabre PRO404 CNC router, this Spring. Come hear what that means for you and your creative process.

Discussion to include:

  • What is a CNC machine? What specifically is a CNC router?
  • What role can CNC machining play with creating sculptural, functional, decorative, or product-oriented 3D objects?
  • What is the typical workflow of outputting to a CNC machine?
  • What are the capabilities of the CIADC CNC router?
  • How can I use the CNC at CIADC?
  • How will CIADC grow their CNC Studio?

Light food and drink will be provided

Free and Open to the public!

CIADC is part of Open House Chicago 2017!

Come learn about the engineering/construction accomplishment, and the past tenants of the 6433 N. Ravenswood building we occupy.  Tour our shops and hear about our adult and teen programming.

CIADC is open Saturday, October 14 from 9am to 6:30pm, and Sunday, October 15 from 12pm – 4pm.

It's BBQ time! Join us on Saturday, September 9th, from 4pm - 6:30pm to celebrate the outgoing Chicago Summer and welcome in the Fall season!

Bring family and friends; this event is open to everyone. The department shops will be open for tours.

Please bring something to grill and/or a dish to pass. We will provide the drinks and everything else!

Make it a day by attending the STUCs in the morning, stay for Open Studio Access in the early afternoon, and BBQ with us at 4pm!

Fall STUC Day

The Safety and Tool Use Certification (STUC) acts as a general and Department-specific safety and policy refresher, and is an opportunity to introduce new shop tools, processes, etc. to Members.

Department STUCs are required for any CIADC Member wishing to use Open Studio Access (OSA) outside of an enrolled class Department:

  • Student Members wishing to work in Department OSA other than their class Department require Department STUC(s)
  • Access Members wishing to work in any Department OSA require Department STUC(s)

A Department STUC is not required for current Student or Student Members of the Department.

Eligibility for any Department STUC requires:

  • that you be a current CIADC Member
  • that you have completed at least 1 previous Core Class in the Department of the STUC

There is no charge for attending scheduled STUC dates. Alternate date STUCs are available for a fee. Access Members must purchase a discounted 5-OSA -or- 10-OSA punch card, valid for the term, before taking the STUC. Register for each Department STUC below.

Note: Department STUCs must be renewed each term, no exceptions. 

Definitions:

  • Non-Members enrolled in any Department Core Class are considered Students
  • Current Members enrolled in any Department Core Class are considered Student Members
  • Current Members not enrolled in any Department Core Class are considered Access Members
  • Core Classes are typically 1/2-term to full-term, general overview Department classes, and are noted in each class description
