It's BBQ time! Join us on Saturday, September 9th, from 4pm - 6:30pm to celebrate the outgoing Chicago Summer and welcome in the Fall season!

Bring family and friends; this event is open to everyone. The department shops will be open for tours.

Please bring something to grill and/or a dish to pass. We will provide the drinks and everything else!

Make it a day by attending the STUCs in the morning, stay for Open Studio Access in the early afternoon, and BBQ with us at 4pm!

Fall STUC Day

The Safety and Tool Use Certification (STUC) acts as a general and Department-specific safety and policy refresher, and is an opportunity to introduce new shop tools, processes, etc. to Members.

Department STUCs are required for any CIADC Member wishing to use Open Studio Access (OSA) outside of an enrolled class Department:

  • Student Members wishing to work in Department OSA other than their class Department require Department STUC(s)
  • Access Members wishing to work in any Department OSA require Department STUC(s)

A Department STUC is not required for current Student or Student Members of the Department.

Eligibility for any Department STUC requires:

  • that you be a current CIADC Member
  • that you have completed at least 1 previous Core Class in the Department of the STUC

There is no charge for attending scheduled STUC dates. Alternate date STUCs are available for a fee. Access Members must purchase a discounted 5-OSA -or- 10-OSA punch card, valid for the term, before taking the STUC. Register for each Department STUC below.

Note: Department STUCs must be renewed each term, no exceptions. 

Definitions:

  • Non-Members enrolled in any Department Core Class are considered Students
  • Current Members enrolled in any Department Core Class are considered Student Members
  • Current Members not enrolled in any Department Core Class are considered Access Members
  • Core Classes are typically 1/2-term to full-term, general overview Department classes, and are noted in each class description

Join us for the opening reception of Fault Lines – a celebration the oddities, irregularities, and shifting surfaces that give definitive character to a finished work – with contributions by Susan Curry, Jake Howard, Micki LeMieux, Julia Paloma, and Doug Rhodus. 

The entire facility will be open for the event, with work in progress happening in Metalworking, Woodworking, and Casting. There will be a bronze pour in Casting during the course of the afternoon, as well as snacks and refreshments to accompany the exhibition opening.

Creativity is process channeled and invigorated within circumstantial limitations. 

Featuring creations by Brian Blankstein and Emily McCormick, Carla Bruni, Laura Miracle, Erik Newman, Julia Paloma, and Jeffrey Visotsky, Country, Life & Economics will focus on design efforts undertaken to breathe new life into old materials – giving the available means a fresh purpose for practical applications. 

The exhibition will highlight items crafted for domestic use, where previously there had simply been parts and the individual drive to make something work.

MakerBot is hosting Makeathons for the summer and we would love to see you there! We’re inviting all educators, designers, makers, and anyone experienced in 3D printing to collaborate with us. The next group exhibit at Chicago Industrial Arts & Design Center will explore and celebrate the initial ideas that provide the spark for fully realized, three-dimensional objects.

The exhibition will be open from May 21 through July 2, 2016. An open call for submissions will remain active throughout the run of the exhibit via ciadc.org/blueprints-submissions 

All submitted images will be printed on 8.5 by 11 inch (215.9 mm x 279.4 mm) letter paper in black and white on a LaserJet printer, and displayed in the gallery space along with selected original drawings, models, and finished projects. 

Submitted images may depict but are not limited to: notes, sketches, maps, mock ups, outlines, plots, vellums, drafts, floor plans, models, shop drawings, technical drawings, snapshots, schematics, negatives, maquettes, mind maps, roughs, graphs, polaroids, renderings, bar napkins, samples, transfers, proofs, grocery lists, et cetera. 

Chicago Industrial Arts & Design Center is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization with a mission to provide education, working access, and community to 3D object makers working with materials and processes requiring industrial workspace, shop tools, and specialized skill sets.

CIADC will be taking part of this year's Lake FX Summit + Expo. The Chicago-centric event at the Cultural Center is a great resource for creatives and makers, featuring: 

  • More than 100 talks, panels and workshops – on topics ranging from marketing and engagement strategies to legal, financial and space issues – will be presented by industry experts for those working in the culinary, fashion, film and media, music, performing arts, technology and design and visual arts fields, with select programs identified for emerging artists and creatives.

CIADC Member Event: Crab Tree Farm Private Tour

We invite current CIADC Members (+ 1 guest) to a private outing at the historic Crab Tree Farm in Lake Bluff, on April 23rd from 10am-1pm. The tour will include a viewing of the renowned Arts and Crafts furnishings collection and an insiders look at the Farm's contemporary artist-in-residence wood, ceramics, and metal workshops. 

Cost is $20 per person, and includes a box lunch and drink.

Association for Computing Machinery: Industrial Arts & Technology

A presentation by Matthew Runfola and Alan Baker on the Integrated Technology & Design Department, focusing on two core categories: 3D CAD modeling for design, rendering, and CNC output, and electronics for light, movement, and sound. The meeting will also feature a tour of CIADC's 10,500 square foot facility and its metalworking, casting and woodworking shops.

The Chicago Chapter of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) is the local professional chapter of the national ACM which is the oldest organization dedicated to computing serving both academics, students and professionals.   Our chapter presents monthly presentations, ten times a year,  on virtually any topic where computing or computers are involved.

Metal is a historically significant material that has been used to create permanent functional, sculptural, and decorative objects for millennia. The metal casting and metal fabrication processes are two different approaches to creating 3D works. Casting involves mold making and pouring molten metal into the mold cavities, while fabrication is an additive process of cutting, shaping, and joining pieces.

Showcasing the talent of our growing Member community, this group show features a selection of cast and fabricated metal objects created at CIADC during our first months of operation.
